The Iona Community has issued the following statement regarding the "Pussy Riot Trial" in Moscow and is shared with members of CT Connect:
"Members of the Iona Community, an ecumenical Christian movement, committed to international justice and peace, at our summer gathering, on 6th August 2012, affirm that the use of music and drama to express protest in support of human rights, is an invaluable witness in the seeking of justice and equality for social groups in all nations.
We strongly urge that in the current case in Moscow, which has received much attention in the international media, the accused Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich, be given a trial which is both fair, and seen to be fair.
We agree that copies of this resolution be sent to the parties involved, the Russian Embassy in London, the Russian and British Governments, Amnesty International, Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, and the media".
